An abundance has been written in the papers recently concerning the bingo industry singing the blues as a consequence of the anti smoking law in England. Things have become so awful that in Scotland the Bingo industry has requested big tax cuts to assist in keeping the businesses from going bankrupt. But will the net adaptation of this quintessential game provide a salvation, or will it never compare to its real life peer?
Bingo has been an familiar game usually played by the "blue rinse" generation. For all that the game recently had witnessed a recent resurgence in acceptance with younger members of society opting to go to the bingo parlors in place of the bars on a Friday night. This is all about to be destroyed with the introduction of the cigarette ban all over England and Wales.
No more will enthusiasts be allowed to puff on cigarettes at the same time marking numbers. From the summer of ‘07 every public location will not be allowed to permit cigarettes in their buildings and this includes Bingo halls, which are possibly the most common locations where people like to smoke.
The effects of the cigarette ban can already be looked at in Scotland where cigarettes are already banned in the bingo parlors. Profits have dropped and the industry is absolutely struggling for its life. But where have the players gone? Of course they have not cast aside this familiar game?
The answer is online. Players are now realizing that they can wager on bingo in front of their computer whilst enjoying a cocktail and smoke and in the end, have a chance at big prizes. This is a recent phenomenon and has happened bordering on perfect with the anti cigarette law.
Of course playing on the internet is unlikely to replace the communal part of heading over to the bingo parlor, but for a group of people the law has left a lot of bingo enthusiasts with no option.
